Different approaches to II-V-I-VI progression

Recommended Posts

I think that there is some songs that are based on repeated cycle of II-V-I-VI chord progression. Especially in swing music this progression and its variants are used. I have had some non-creative moments when improvised over this and I believe that one reason is that it tends to loose its tension and release when repeated over and over. Then it might start to sound a bit dull and unsurprising. Also it seems that strict arpeggio-to-chord or scale-to-chord thinking doesn't help for long time in improvising this chord progression.

So I started little challenge with friends and come up this video.
Kindest, Mikko
