Using mental visualization in composing

Recommended Posts

I have spoke something about improvising eyes closed, composing without thinking keys and practicing unfamiliar styles but there is also one another method I somehow naturally tend to use. I call it mental visualization. It's something that normally happens when one is reading book, day-dreaming, listening music etc. So while I'm composing in addition to create different moods that suite together in appropriate or surprising way I guide the composing process with mental images. Images come together or without the music and I let them rule the composing and also let composing start new images. When mental visualization has brought the basic theme to my mind I tend to keep it through the whole process. Here is one example where I "saw" pictures of nature in different state in spring.

Do you have experimented this technique?

Kindest, Mikko
