What key?
I am looking for an intro for "Hotel California" and the I have heard that the first note or chord of a song is usually the key it is in, but in this case, the clef has no sharps or flats, but the song begins with the first melody note being a series of "e's" over the top of the A-minor chord. What key would this be written in if one was trying to find an intro written in the same key? I noticed Kirk's lesson on this song is in A minor and seems to flow with the sheet music I have.
thanks,
hb

That's right - It starts in the key of A minor. A minor has no sharps or flats in its key signature.

As far as I can remember the progression for the original is :-
Bm-F#-A-E-G-D-Em-F# (1 bar of each)
I'd also recommend the Gypsy Kings version of Hotel California, very different but very good.

I play it in Bm too (as the original). The intro sounds good capo'd at the 7th fret and played like this

The oficial tab book has one part capoed at the 7th fret like oldG says.

Hi
The first chord can establish the key, but there is not enough information from one note to do that.

But am I right in saying that if one wanted to play the intro and the song, that it would be a little akward to capo the intro and then take the capo off, or am I missing something?
thanks,
hb

It would, but with practice it is playable using a normal bar over the 7th fret in place of the capo. I tried it years ago and if I had put the time in to smooth it out, it would have worked well.

I doubt it. It was one of those 101 rock songs books.

You could barre it as AT suggested, play 2 guitars, or team up with someone to play it with ( I'm blessed in this respect, as I have guitar playing family and friends ). The unplugged video I have, shows three guitarists contributing to the intro...
