So What Do You Go With C.A.G.E.D Anyway

This subject came up in the chat room last night. One of the guys said the chords sound the same so how does that help me. I said I would record a bit showing what you can do with just one chord using the Caged system. I just used the C chord and threw in a 6 interval or A note in the first position. Added a couple of b3 to 3 at the 5 position and the 8 position. So I played the C shape first then the A shape for C at the 5 fret, the E shape for C at the 8 fret and the Basic C chord shape at the 13fret before ending back at the E shape 8 fret. All I did was break up the C chord into little bits played in different places. Now the hard part.Tabbing it out. I played it slowly so you could follow what was going on.

----------------------------------------------8----------------8----------------------
-------1-------------1-----------4--5---------8-----4--5------8---4--5---8-------13--------
-0--2------5--0--2-----5---------------5-----------------5---------------8--9--------------
-----------5-----------5----------------5-----------------5---------------------------10-----
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------10----
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Don't let the double stops ring. It is kind of a country rag feel. It is just 3 bars. You could go back to the first bar one more time before going to the last bar to make it 4 bars in C if you wanted to. It would be pretty easy to repeat the pattern in the other chords in the Key of C to end up with a nice little bt or to embellish what is already in the tab. Hope that gives you some ideas. The caged system can be fun to play with. You don't have to use it just to find full barre chords.

This was great, on top of what Kirk has on here about the CAGED system, this should keep me busy for quite awhile. Thanks for posting this, it is greatly appreciated.

It can be taken a bit further than that linear projection of the chords up the neck. We all learn our open position cowboy chords first. The point is that the C.A.G.E.D. applies not just to notes but to playing each of those 5 keys in the open position, and then appyling that knowledge up the neck.
In other words when you think of playing in C major at the 8th position you are in the E form and all the chord shapes that apply to playing E major in the root position apply here, except they are now the I,ii,iii,IV,V,vi and vii of the C major scale.

I got the CAGED Cracked CDs some time back - Brad Carlton really gives the subject a workout! Bought some other of his offerings off the Truefire website, too - like Improv a la Mode, because I liked his style and thoroughness.

For me CAGED Cracked was well worth getting at the time. That was pre- PlaneTalk, of course - which I now find a whole lot more useful from the practical/useablility standpoint.

Thanks for the example, AT.
