What you need is something concrete to work on ... to practice.
You can never do enough chord study/practice so go to the "Chords " section of this site and get those open chords under your fingers. Make your hands, through sheer concentration, finger those chords so you can strum them and get a clean, ringing sound out of them. By strum, I mean lightly drag a flat pick across the strings. Practice changing from one to another ... practice picking the notes separately ...
Before you can play, you've got to work.

Follow the basics... Do some exercises to increase your finger dexterity, and also stretches on your hands to get them used to working the fretboard, and getting a wide range on your notes that are at times required. Also do build up callouses on your fingertips also, which will let you play without much pain.
Also, use Kirks site to get info, as well as the Lessons section of www.ultimate-guitar.com (Dont try going to the forum there... it's not too friendly for new players... too much overblown ego's there. Lesson section does have nice stuff there... but forums are horrible)
Guitar: 1) Behringer Stratocaster; Webstrings Memphis Electric Xlight strings; Dunlop Picks
2) Ibanez TCY-10 Talman Series; Elixir Light strings.

My advice is to memorize 3 major basic chords G, C, D, and work on them every spare minute you have stay on them until you can do a simple progression by heart and you can go from G C D its called muscle memory thats how you can go to chords fast, but learn those three and after you have those down good try to learn other chords.
"JUST REMEMBER PRACTICE IS EVERYTHING TO GET GOOD YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE HEART TO PLAY AND YOU HAVE TO WANT TO PLAY."
I personally play everyday I love to play and youll get mad and feel like breakin stuff just take a break and remember to breath just dont quit I promise youll get better
I wish you the best of luck
P.S It's good to start out on an acoustic w/ electric it's too complicated w/ the amp and all the knobs for a beginner GOOD LUCK.

Everyone else here is giving good advice, but don't forget to learn how to tune the guitar. An out of tune guitar sounds out of tune no matter what your fingers are doing.
Peace,

lucky..... ( truly, an apt name for a guitar player! )
Ditto! What every one says. I know that seems like a lot going on. Learning the guitar is like learning anything else. It takes time and patience. I can't stress patience enough!!! Learning guitar is like learning a new language. If you don't know the vocabulary, how can you speak the language? I totally understand. But don't get frustrated. Don't get all tensed up. There's plenty of time. Before you know it, playing guitar will be second nature.
