  playing the vocal melody

if i am writing a solo for a song and i want to play parts/the whole vocal melody how would i go about figuring out how to play the melody that the vocalist is singing. (like they do in many nirvana songs)

Start with the chords, look for the melody notes in the chord shapes, but more than anything, listen carefully and do it by ear.
