Sheet music and chords question?

I am learning to read sheet music. So far so good.
Why is there a chord name overtop each bar when the chords do not even have the note that is in the bar.

The notes in that example are what you SING
The chords are what you PLAY.

The chords DO have the notes. Look at the first bar:

The melody notes are B & D in the notation.
The chord is G. If you look at your chord, you'll see that the chord G is made up of 3 notes G B & D. So the melody notes (B & D) ARE in the chord.

Sometimes the melody notes that you sing won't be part of the chord, but most of the time they will be.

If you're playing the notes as a melody (instead of singing them) then someone else will have to play the chords. But they WILL match.

Yes - make something up - something suitable that matches the rhythm of the song.
By the way, one of the forum moderators will have to remove your example as it's a copyright arrangement.

Hi ics1974, Just a suggestion for the strumming, if you've got a copy of the song, listen a few times to get a feel for it or try and play along using it as a backing track, does help the learning process, a metronome is also a very useful piece of equipment worth investing in to keep the beat.

The notes of the melody that are not in the chord are SCALE tones in that key unless they are preceded by an accidental sharp or flat.
