Are you asking about what you would need to know to start writing your own music? Your post is a little unclear.

You are going to get a lot of different views here and the one that will most propably come to the forefront many times is this... Play what sounds good...

If you are just starting out, get a song you know and play the chords/notes in a different timming placing emphasis on different notes than the original. You might event change a couple of chord voicings and notes where you feel is appropriate...

Then go out and try to put the song, melodies and harmonies into a theoretical context if you wish to... This will allow you to understand the mechanics behind this "new" song of yours.

But most importantly play what sounds nice to you...

hm i was just thinking about this earlier today actually

im kinda inspired to write a new instrumental piece atm after listening to some joe satriani and I came to the conclusion that id need to write some basic rhythm part...so knowledge of chords and their construction would be helpful

but ontop of that i would need to write some melody line, so an understanding of keys and scales is what id need

once you understand the seperate elements like scales, then how those scales can be turned into modes, then how those modes can be used to generate your relative chords, then imo you could write just about anything because youd understand how it all fits together

All you REALLY need is a good ear and some experimentation, something i have trouble with. When i try to write something i start with the related chords for that key and play around a little, i like to find new voicings, and figure out which notes the chords share, "common tones," i think. Maybe add a note here or there and go with what sounds good. The hard part for me is getting a good melody.
