Let me just say that writing music is much more than understanding the language. It's being an appreciator of music; a student of music style. I'm not saying you have to like everything, but a person should appreciate the writing of different styles.
Write your own music based upon that which has already been written. So much of it out there is similar. I'm not suggesting beinga copycat. I'm suggesting that if you learn to break down song basics you'll be able to apply the mechanics to your own style.
Spend time listening and understanding. Spend time listening, listening, listening.
