Trying to finish a song with a chord, not hanging

Hello all,

I am wondering about how to finish a song on a chord but on a chord that does leave the listener hanging. I remember reading somewhere that some chords can smoothly lead into others and then some can not. Something like finishing on a G or C rather than an Bm. Is there a family of these chords and I am I making sense? If not please correct my statements.

Thanks.

i like ending on root dimished, 13th's, or #9 or flat9. depends of the general tone of the song. sometimes ending on the 2 or 6 of the key instead of the root

Lori
How do you end up with 1 million dollars playing jazz? start with 2 million.

It depends on the key, for different keys the same chords has different jobs, like build tension/release tension and so on. I think a root is you best bet, what chords are you using?

If you learn how to play songs, then you learn songs. If you learn how to improvise, then you learn music.

Yes, that's sounds good Lorispencer. It can finish on a high note with a good feeling behind it. I think that makes sense too by not ending on the root.

Thanks.

None right now, just some simple finger picking.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule

Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
