Tekker's Lessons - Update (Microphones)
Hey all,
I just added another recording lesson about microphones and miking techniques.... I also put in a few microphone recommendations for good but "inexpensive" mics.
Microphones
Enjoy!

Thanks Clancy. I'm trying to get done as much as I can before starting school again in a couple weeks......
I've also got another one almost finished for general guitar (some finger exercises that I posted here before). It should be done pretty soon.... hopefully.

Excellent! Very comprehensive explanation on mics that will definitely help me when I go shopping for one. I'm after one that will basically be good for acoustic, electric, and vocals.

Thanks coldethyl!
How much are you looking to spend on a mic? It may be better to get a couple cheaper mics to cover more bases. A dynamic and a condenser would cover all those, but it'd be a little harder to find just "one" mic that would work well on all of those without needing something else to acompany it.
The condenser may not be the greatest on electric by itself and the dynamic probably won't work that well on acoustic.

Probably around the $200-300 AUS mark.
When it comes down to it, I guess I need a general/all purpose mic.
Basically something that I can go on PC with and record with so that I can upload some material on the music forum here.
Something that I can use either with electric or acoustic and maybe vocals too.
I was thinking along the lines of a Shure SM57?

According to google the exchange rate for the SM57 would be $130 AUS. You could get that and a Studio Projects B1 (also $130) and be well under the $300 mark. Condensers are awesome for acoustic and is well worth the $130!
The B1 requires phantom power so do you have a mixer or a preamp that you could use with it? Even the SM57 will need a mixer or preamp (the preamps in standard soundcards are awful), so you'd definitely benifite from one of these if you don't already have one.

Thanks Tekker!
That would be great if I can pick those mics for $260 all up. Yes, I might have to get a preamp to go with it as well.
Thanks for giving me the info on that.

In the US both the SM57 and the B1 are $100 each, and according to google, $100 USD = $130 AUD.... So unless there is some hidden shipping charges or taxes or something, I would assume the price for both mics would come to $260.

The Marshall MXL 603's used to be a lot cheaper (like $68 a piece I believe)... But they have gone up significantly for some odd reason. I haven't priced them in a while so I was rather surprised to see them at $100 each.
There was the $20 mic that I posted about in the recording forum, but the link to that site is now dead..... Or at least it was down the last time I checked.... Nope, still down. So I don't know if it's coming back or not. For $20 it was a great sounding mic.
What kind of mic are you looking for? For what instruments?
....And being a poor college student I know all about the limited income.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
