Going to play in Jazz Band this September(help)?

29 July 2008 - 03:57 PM

What do I need to know?

I know all my positioned barred majors, minors, 7ths, 9ths, maj7ths, min7ths, m7b5,min7,min9... What other standard jazz chords should I learn?(Im going to take some music theory lessons soon to learn how to construct chords, but is their other things I should learn about chords)

I have basic music reading skills...

And any suggestions for scales I should learn to do some solos here and their? We play big band jazz songs, ballads and some Latin type stuff.

Also any suggestions for Jazz albums I should listen to to get a better understanding of it?(More specifically Jazz guitar albums)

Any tips would help. Thanks.

Help from people who know music theory...

04 July 2008 - 12:39 PM

Well this summer Iím teaching my self music theory for my high school jazz band and am doing pretty good so far but thereís one thing I do not understand at all...

(I still think better in tab)

For example, I know the chord "Em7" which can be played like this:
(from low to high)

x79787

And in some jazz songs that I'm learning they have a chord written like
this:

Em7/11

I looked it up and in tab form and the chord shape is this:

x77787

I see that you flatted the note on the D string by a whole step but how does "/11" indicate this? I heard sort of somewhere that it has something to do with scalesÖ I know my C and G major scale all the way up the neck and the E pentatonic scales. Iím still learning my scales but can someone explain this to me? Thanks.
