  Firefox/Quicktime problem - Experts please help!

Hi

I was trying to build a groove (backing track) at Wholenote.com this morning and came across the following problem - whenever I try to play back the groove I get a message from Firefox that "additional plugins are required to display all the media on this page". When I hit the "Install Missing Plugins" button it indicates that Quicktime is required - yet QT v6.5.1 is already installed on my computer.

Everything all works fine in Internet Explorer, but I don't want to have to switch to IE every time this happens.

I have Googled and followed this advice:

QUOTE/

Quicktime 6.5

* Close all instances of Firefox
* Launch Quicktime
* Go to Edit > Preferences > Quicktime Preferences
* Select "Browser Plug-in" from the Drop-down Menu
* Click "Mime Settings"
* Enable the file types you wish Quicktime to handle. Do not enable Flash.
* Click "OK"
* Select "Connection Speed" in the Drop-down Menu
* Choose the connection that best matches your current Internet connection speed
* Click OK

/END QUOTE

This hasn't fixed the issue.

Any ideas? Has anyone else managed to fix this problem? Please help soon - tearing my hair out is not good for my health!

Thanks ...

Ian

Thanks, Les - but that's not the solution. I'm down to my last 3 handfuls of hair!

Sorry I can't be of any help. I use FF as well and sometimes it can do some strange things.

Good luck. Keep us posted.

What version of FF are you running ... just type about: in the URL field

Also,..... what is your preferred player? QTime, WinAmp, Windows Media ... something else?

Les - 1.5.0.7 is the version. I've followed all the advice in the other thread you mentioned and uninstalled QT, installing the latest version of QT alternative instead, then in FF set QTA as the program to open all QT-type files - to no avail. Down to my last handful of hair now

One thing, though - when I uninstalled QT you are given a choice to uninstall or not uninstall the 'QT extensions'. Not really understanding what they are, I chose not to uninstall them ... any thoughts on this? Thanks again.

You know Ian, I have spent days trying to troubleshoot Firefox plugin missing problems... in fact, when we first started embedding WMV files here for Kirk's lessons, I had a hell of a time trying to get it to work in all versions of Firefox... turns out it was the embedding (site side) that was the problem... So you may be wasting your time trying to install the missing plugin. It may be the code at Wholenote that isn't correct.

It might be worth starting a thread over at WholeNote asking if other members are having the same problem with your version of Firefox... or you could save yourself the aggravation and just use IE... you know, it won't kill ya.

Thanks for the info, Clancy. It may well be Wholenote's side - hadn't thought of that. I stay away from IE because I don't trust it to be safe - I've read too many complaints about its lax security.

BTW - Know anywhere I can by myself a nice hairpiece??

Well you can do the total wipe thing Ian.

You could uninstall firefox, quicktime, go into say windows media player and default everything to it. (make sure you have a browser first like I.E. before you delete your firefox), then redownload the install file for ff and quicktime... run ff install first and then quicktime. Keep everything defaulted when it asks you to select options.

My mime settings are as follows and I have had no problem with em

Nothing checked on streaming
On video- just the Quicktime Movie box is clicked
Nothing checked on audio
Mpeg- 3GPP2 is checked, Video is protected is checked, SD video file is checked, and AMC Media file is checked.
Nothing checked on MP3-Mpeg
Images shouldn't really matter, but: MACPaint, Pict, and Quicktime image file are checked.
Nothing checked on miscellaneous.

And on my associations the only things checked are the Quicktime Movie, and the image ones from above... none others.

Im thinking you may have to uninstall quicktime and reload though, maybe something got corrupted or deleted accidentally.

I can understand that Ian but if IE6 is up to date and properly patched it's very unlikely you'd experience any problems, especially if you're only using it to visit a trusted and well-established site like WholeNote.

PS No, I don't work for Bill Gates.

Firefox, while a great browser, has a lot of minor glitches that add up to a major PITA. I've had the same issue many times.

I agree that using IE for this one occasion won't kill.

Add a couple of gripes from the Mac side of the fence. Because there's no longer WMP support, I've downloaded Flip4Mac, which seems to work okay. However, I'd gotten too rambunctious trying to keep popups and ads from appearing in FireFox to the point that many times I get a blank square with a big "?" in the middle. Like gfb&b Radio! And YouTube. And other stuff I'd like to see. Fortunately, the Safari browser works fine in those instances. Curiously, I can still get Kirk's lessons and other media in FF. Go figure!

papadog... the radio is a Flash player... it's very strange that that is not working for you in FF. Do you have the latest flash plugin installed for FF?

Oh, yeah, Clancy, I download Flash Player every now and then. And the Safari browser does 'em just fine. I think it's just a matter of wiping out everything for FF the next time there's an upgrade and starting over again. Let the ads and the popups have their way. I'm sure I just went overboard a few months ago trying to block too many things. Patience is a virtue, I'm told!
