Should my first guitar be nice or crappy?

Hello Everyone,

First of all, I am a guitar newbie, this would be my first instrument. I was handed down a 1984 Yairi DY48. It is in pristine condition. Is it a good idea for me to learn to play on this nice guitar or should I get a used $50 guitar off craigslist and learn to play on it first? Is some wear and tear expected when one is learning to play?

Welcome Zyclone

If your not a klutz then there shouldn't be any wear and tear.

I'd use the Yairi, a crappy guitar can be hard or even next to impossible to learn on.

Its possible to get a good cheap guitar but I'd want to test it before I bought it.

Test it back to back with the good one, you'll need a little experience playing first to be able to compare or have an experience friend help out.

just my opinion

Thanks for the input. I thought that it might be better to learn on a higher quality instrument but the Yairi is really nice and in great condition... I'd rather be safe then sorry.

Zyclone,

Good advice from 6string. Take cxare of the Yairi and it should serve you will as a beginner.

Welcome to the forum!
