Trying to verify how fake this is

Recommended Posts

Like the topic says I'm basically positive I've got a fake gibson guitar on my hands. Truss rod cover isn't right, the logo on the headstock is something I've never seen, the neck doesn't quite have the correct bend to it, and a few other things are questionable. I'm fairly new to the guitar world and extremely unfamiliar with Gibsons. Just trying to get any information anyone can offer on what this thing is. A Chinese knock off? Or a Frankenstein guitar? Anything anyone can offer is very much appreciated!

Hopefully, if fake, it's not like the government with counterfeit money, they confiscate it without reimbursement.

Oh wow! I wasn't even aware they would do that! On second thought I might just keep my curiosity to myself haha, it plays beautifully I'd like to hold onto it.

Your pretty safe, they only do that with money, darn goverment they never let me get ahead.

If only I could find serial numbers on the damn thing! Ive honestly looked everywhere. Starting to just accept it for the pretty little monster it is.

Usually for an electric it's on the back of the headstock.

but it looks like they didn't always etch it into the wood, sometimes they

used an ink stamp or a decal (what where they thinking :hammers: )

So it may have disappeared.

If you've looked EVERWHERE on the outer surface, you may want to detach the body and neck to look for a neck stamp. The neck is usually manufactured at a different time than the body, but it could give a clue.

My HM Strat had a decal...and it came right off when I cleaned the guitar! Fortunately I'd already written down the serial number. I contacted Fender and they were able to provide details...including the fact that the number would NOT be found anywhere else on the guitar.

If your mystery guitar sounds great...GREAT! :)

How'do Hillfrog ;)

hard to tell for sure from these pics - that said - the headstock, truss rod cover and the bridge all look wrong for a "real" Gibby - nice Guitar tho :)

also if the serial number isn't stamped on the back of the headstock - then probably suspect....

don't try n take the neck off to find a serial number tho.....lol.....;)

Say, this got me thinkin'...! :smartass:

Do ALL Gibsons have neck thru instead of bolt-on? If neck thru ONLY, then you'd KNOW you have a fake. ;)

Can't say this link is conclusive, but maybe it'll help you out some? :online2lo

Gibson Guitars are generally set-neck (neck glued in) rather than thru-neck - and they did a couple of bolt-ons in the 80's - Les Paul shape, "Invader" was one of the names used - i had one of these years back :)

In either case I'd un-recommend that Hillfrog try to remove the neck! :o

If it's a bolt-on and he cannot let the matter slide, then he could carefully separate the neck and body. Hopefully the number would be meaningful to Gibson...if it's theirs.

maybe an Aria ? Aria have done a few LP copies with different headstock designs - the outline on this is very similar to the one you have.......

That aria headstock is basically identical to mystery guitar. I have a couple arias already and looking online I noticed the similarities between that pro II model and my guitar.

nice pics :) .......it is a cool Guitar

couple of other details that are defo no Gibson like - the cutaway on the body is too sharp on the end and no back binding, the headstock inlay split diamond is like a few Arias i've seen too........

that Invader is pretty nice too Kendo ;)

Paul.........
