The most underrated guitarists

Recommended Posts

Has anybody mentioned Randy Bachman---some of BTO's tunes show a very talented guitarist hidden beneath all that heavy driving rythym. Scott

I have never heard of your 1st three but definately Johnny Winter IMO. A virtuoso

whose name is often mentioned but never seems to be in a top list. Good one:yes:

Tab Benoit, Jimmy Thackery and Tynsley Ellis are all modern blues players. Tab Benoit is Southern blues :wow: and the other two are a more rocking blues. Like a combo of Billy Gibbons and SRV. Check some of thier stuff out if you get the chance.

I like the best guitarists post but I am always interested in all of the underrated ones.

We all know the guitar gods but what about the ones that fly under the radar?

My top 5 are (not in order):

George Harrison-The Beatles

Neil Schon-Journey

Billy Gibbons-ZZ Top

Eliot Easton-The Cars

Lindsay Buckingham-Fleetwood Mac

And there are so many more!

ie-The Edge (U2), Buddy Holly, Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead), etc, etc, etc,

Can anyone name more?

Trivia:

Billy Gibbons was one of Jimi Hendix's most favorite guitarists.

mark tremonti (not a lot of people are aware of what he could actually do)

buckethead

greg howe

jason becker

Tolkki Timo

Michael James Romeo

most of these are known but they deserve more credit than others........i mean, you have guys such as curt cobain (dont like him by the way) head and monkey, and it gets me mad is that all the players in my list are way better players IMO

Sharon Isbin

Charlies Byrd

Quite a few people in America don't recognize Richard Thompson, that's always a surprise to me.

David Russel (yeah, I'm a classical freak...)

Any of the Romeros family, but paricularly Angel.

John Renborn (again, americans go "Who?"...)

Charles Sawtell

Kirk Lorange

Scotty Moore

The list goes on and on and on and...

generally when I think of underrated guitarists, I think of some of the better female guitarists as they seem to never get any recognition at all - players like Patty Larkin, Emily Saliers from Indigo Girls, etc.

How about Kelly Joe Phelps, Bert Jansch, Martin Simpson, Adrian Legg, Michael Schenker Richard Thomson and Albert Lee. The fun could go on forever..

OK, what about

Jeff Beck (often lost in the Jazz Fusion land, but amazing stuff when he's "on")

Frank Zappa (often unapproachable cause he's so diff, but truly incredible player)

I love Neil Young when he's in a grunge phase! (My friend who is a pretty decent player compared to me jokes that Neil only knows 2 notes on guitar)
