You Ain't Here Anymore

Recommended Posts

Hey guys ,,,,

Here's a demo track of a tune going on the Moonbow River project ...

You Ain't Here Anymore

On the deepest cobalt blue of a moon lit night

The swayin' of the water's capped with sapphire light

We picked up some flat rocks and skipped them on the lake

Mine went out to five and yours went out to eight

As the ripples in the water made their circles back to shore

It seemed to take forever maybe a little bit more

And we sat there on the bank with my head in your lap

It's a shame we don't have anymore nights like that

[bREAK]

Up at five thirty, a little butter on my toast

Looking out the window, did I see shadows of a ghost

I guess it's just my eyes playing those worn out tricks

You know, the kind you get when ya got someone in your heart that ya miss

Picked up my car keys and my old leather coat

Kind of chilly out there this morning, I don't wanna get cold

Can't find my gloves, do you know where I might have laid them down and then I swore

Damn, I keep forgetting, I keep forgetting, I keep forgetting you ain't here anymore

[CHORUS OR JUST A BRIDGE]

My head's all a-shambles, my thoughts keep a ramblin

My heart is a- achin' for you girl

There's no way I can turn, without feeling the burn

Cause you ain't here anymore

The lights are low and the flicker of the candles seem to dance

I got it in my mind tonight I might have half a chance

A waiter brought the menu, snapped his fingers for some wine

But I never could speak French so you had to order mine

We sat there with you trying to teach me how to say je t'aime (I love you)

You were laughing so hard and asked if I'd been smoking hemp

I said I'll never speak French but I know how to love you back

It's a shame we don't have anymore nights like that

[bREAK]

A dusting of a winters snow blows to the edge of the street

Man, I just hate the cold because it hates my feet

I'll bring in some kindlin' wood and fire up the stove

You know, I think I heard them calling for an inch or two of snow

I'll warm up some instant coffee babe, if you don't mind

I'd like to have some regular, but I don't wanna take the time

What are you doin, hon, are you busy, it's awful quiet in there, and then I swore

Damn, I keep forgetting, I keep forgetting, I keep forgettin, you ain't here anymore

[CHORUS]

On the deepest cobalt blue of a moon lit night

The swayin of the water's capped with sapphire light

And we sat there on the bank with my head in your lap

It's a shame we don't have anymore nights like that

It's a shame we don't have anymore nights like that

There never will be anymore nights like that.....

Wow, what a beautiful song Les. When I read the lyrics i was thinking, hmm, this is a bit long, but when I listened I was wished it was longer.

This is one of my favourites of yours. Beautifully played and sung with real emotion. Excellent.

Thank you Doug! Very much! :)

I'll be re-recording again this week and doing a little refinement with the lyrics. But not too much. I'm very happy with the lyrics as they are (what's posted is 3rd re-write) but I want to work on lyrical timing a bit. There's just a couple of words I need to redo/replace and that's mostly for vocals.

Thanks for listening.

I don't know how I missed this before - brilliant - I'm with Doug - I read the lyrics and thought....hmm, how's that goin to work - and then I was mesmerised by the story line. And I was thinking, parts of that fingerpicking pattern (just a couple of bars in places) sounds very familiar to me and then, of course! It's pure Dylan - not all of it but there's a pattern you play at times that sounds exactly the same as one/some of his.

Now I'll have to figure out which tune it was - it has that same, waiting, waiting, waiting, and then the resolution of the lyric with that couple of bars to match - I'm not explaining it well - I'll have to listen a few times more, but it 's going to bug me now until I place it. Unless you give us a clue of course. One of your best, Les. :claping::claping:

Hi Carol,

Yes. There's no denying the Dylan influence. But then after all these years of playing Dylan tunes I can't help it now. :)

I'm in another rewrite on this lyric. Not a drastic rewrite. I need to tighten up some things and make it a bit more comfortable to sing. I'm also working on additional instrument harmonies, though I really like this just acoustic and a vocal. So, I'll test the waters and see if it goes anywhere.

Thanks for having a listen. :)

I just love these lines

"We picked up some flat rocks and skipped them on the lake

Mine went out to five and yours went out to eight

As the ripples in the water made their circles back to shore

It seemed to take forever maybe a little bit more"
