I tabbed the greensleeves synth part so I can learn the melody then improvise variations of the melody while the backing is going. This is from the fingerstyle section of fretsource's lesson here it is:

Check this out!

It's Coltrane improvising the melody to greensleeves. If you don't know who John Coltrane is he's a pillar in the history of music. He's a jazz saxophonist and he was the first player to stop strickly following the chord progression and he invented jazz fusion.
If you learn how to play songs, then you learn songs. If you learn how to improvise, then you learn music.
