Inspiration. When it comes to writing lyrics, something has to be the spark, the inspiration. It can come from many places ... It can come in a flash, it can be a slow burning idea that simmers away in the back of your mind for years, it can be a break-up or a make-up, or it can come from a rhyming dictionary.
Years ago, when songwriting was first and foremost on my mind, I was constantly searching for ideas to write about. During a particularly dry spell, I went to the local bookshop and bought a rhyming dictionary, thinking it might trigger something off.
I was right, it did. I settled on words ending in 'ect' and wrote Hooked on You, which has little to do with anyone in particular, but is in fact the product of my quest for lines ending with 'ect' words. I already had a good idea of the melody and chord structure, but no words.
