What string gauges do you use?
I think it sounds like a lame poll and maybe it is, but I was just interested to see what gauges of string you use or even if you care at all .
I personally use 12's, not too light and good for bending, but still a strong bass sound.

I am currently using Gibson Brite Wires - gauges 10-13-17-26-36-46 - on my Les Paul.
I usually stay with 10-46's myself as well - easy to bend and still a good sound.

Extra Light here.
But I've been adviced that it'll reduse the tone a bit.

I use .11's on my Les Paul and .10's on my Strat. I don't know that I'd call .11 gauge electric strings light though.

Custom .11's on my Strat. The 3rd string is a .20 plain steel.
GHS Thick'n'Thin .10 - 52 on my G&L and Epiphone Dot.
Peace,
Rico

010 Heavy Bottom on my electric
012 on my acoustic. I want 013 for it, but they are simply not to be found anywhere 'round here...

I voted "different, depends on my mood" but that is not really true. I have changed my strings twice in the past few months but both sets (although different makes) were just labelled "Classical Guitar String Set - NYLON - Ball end". As a comlete beginner could someone please advise me what I should ask for at my local music shop?

Depends
On my seagull and Ibenez10ae I like 11's---string of choice is martin Marquis; on myLP type electrric prefer 10's-Fender Bullets or Ernie Ball slinky's.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
