What exactly is the problem? What is the trouble when you play a D chord for instance?

What is the problem when you try to play a chord? All the notes won't ring out, or you get fretbuzz everywhere?

Start with small chords and work your way up to the 'full' chord if you need. Take it one, two and three strings at a time and go from there.

Sure, playing single notes are valuable, but they can be easily turned into two- and three-note harmonies and you could be finding that playing satisfaction again.

Have fun with it,

Steve

Assuming it's you and not the guitar, keep at it!!!

After almost two years, I can get a descent barre chord 70% of the time. Regular chords were a challenge too, buzz, buzz, buzz.

Well, that can be answered correctly by saying yes or no! For the most part, popular music, folk and rock, that is played on the guitar make the guitar a chordal instrument. So, learning chords is really the order of the day. You can learn notes at the same time or after you're learning the chords so you can see how the chords are constructed.
