Learn Jazz from start?

I love Rock Guitar - the Q is for my GF:
She wants to play jazz guitar. Right now she doesn't play anything (except me ).
Should she start learning Jazz guitar from beginning, or first learn regular lessons, & only then start learning to play Jazz?

She should start with the basic lessons here
Brand new to playing the guitar?...read this first.

Then she should look at chord construction. Jazz has a lot of extended chords in it. There are also chord progressions that are used quite often in jazz. Those need to be looked at too. That is a start.

If what she wants to play is jazz she should find a teacher that specializes in teaching jazz. She'll still start at the beginning ("this is a C", etc.) but they'll be able to lay the foundation to get her where she wants to go more quickly.

In case you're thinking of teaching her yourself, DON'T! People usually take instruction from strangers far more easily than they do from family members/significant others. Offer advice only when asked and encouragement on a regular basis.

As has been said, tell her that she needs to use Kirk's and other's lessons here to get the basics down first. Or, get a teacher for the basics. Just tell the teacher that you have the goal of learning the jazz style.

Becoming a great guitarist has less to do with fancy moves than it does becoming a master of the basics and learning musicianship.
It's not what you can't do. It's how you play what you already know.

If she is your true love......big tip, secretly learn a bit of jazz so when she is ready for jamming you can lay down a cool jazz rhythm or maybe some improv over her rhythm.

She would love you forever!

Won't teach her myself. I'm a newbie myself, and I'm much more into rock. Can't imagine how a gentle Jazz loving flower like her fell for a black-wearing pierced goth-girl like me (not that i'm complaining...).

Apart from a few basics for guitar. This (above) is the best advice she could have. Jazz is so different in many ways to other guitar theory. It's basically the top of the hill stuff.

Check out Eva Cassidy - Very good player - no longer with us.

Check out Emily Remler - She has good jazz teaching video stuff.

New York Times - (EIGHT years ago Emily Remler was picking out rock tunes on a single string of a guitar. She had never heard any jazz, she couldn'tread a note of music and had no particular interest in being a musician. Today she is being hailed as one of the major jazz stars of the 1980's, a guitarist of unusual authority and individuality.)

I'm sure there are many others you could find !!!

It's been very important throughout my career that I've met all the guys I've copied, because at each stage they've said,
"Don't play like me, play like you." - ERIC CLAPTON.
AND NOW THAT I HAVE SEEN HIM IN CONCERT IN BRISBANE I LIKE HIM EVEN MORE ! ! !
