If you don't already have it, get Kirk's PlaneTalk. If you are starting out, It will help you see the entire fretboard and the chords will come easier.

What I do is break up a lesson into pieces, practice each hard picking, skip over the ones I know, and have done, and basically just memorize the picking pattern... Kirk would know more about this, since he is the pro, and I the amateur...

Time, arik22, time. It takes more that a week to even begin to assimilate all that stuff.
Having said that, however, there are really just two main flavors: Major and minor. The variations of those two flavors, such as 7th, major 7th, 6th etc, apply to both in the same manner ... there are others flavors, of course, but start by really cementing in the majors/minors, then look at those shapes and watch how the number flavors affect the shapes. You will see the common thread. The secondary flavors -- augmented and diminished -- are used rarely and are easy to understand once you know major/minor ... really well.
In a little while, check out my book PlaneTalk ...

What style of music is this for?
All styles. Music is music. This technique is strictly a means of decoding the fretboard. With six strings (which don't all relate to each other in the same way) and 15 or so frets, the fingerboard of the guitar can seem like a very complex place to try and make sense of. The PlaneTalk trick does it instantly, when properly digested.
Whoops, I just read this...

If you know the plane talk method then you know where the slide will hit the right notes. Playing techniques will be addressed in Kirks' slide dvd which should be out shortly.
I would suggest also buying the dvd with the book. The two together really make things clear.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
Buy it now for only $10 |
