Regarding 3/4 Timing

Hi Friends !

I hope everything is well there !

Sorry if my post (question) is a bit basic or foolish

Actually I find myself comfortable with the Common Time (4/4), but I dont know why I have developed a 'Phobia' kind of thing with '3/4' Timing... even before I start to learn the Piece, I feel discouraged and 'afraid' to even attempt it...

I dont know why this is happening..., Kindly advice if this is a common thing among beginners, who are learning to read, or is just my foolish-feeling and how should I handle this....

One more thing I wanted to ask was, is it really necessary to play a piece from notation for the First time is see it ? I mean I dont intend to play in a band where I'm just given a piece and asked to play it exactly...so can I take my time to read a piece and study it, and then play it from memory ? Actually I dont intend to learn "Standard Notation" atall, but as my Teacher is insisting - I thought "why not to learn a new thing - may be it comes useful someday..." Kindly advice regarding this also...

Take care Buddies and Have a Wonderful Day !
Regards
Kush

3/4 timing was a pain for me too when I first encountered it! 4/4 is so much more comfortable... but I got over it with time. I just practised playing 3/4 tunes over and over, until I got the grip of it.

As for your other question... no if you don't intend to learn sight-reading it's not necessary to play a piece from notation for the first time you see it. The good thing about still learning notation is that you can pick out songs from notation, even if a bit slow. I understand that that's what you're more interested in doing, so if I were you I wouldn't bother too much about the notation system, concentrate on other things that you feel are more important.

There is a running joke about 3/4 time and bands that i play with. I hopefully remember that it is 3/4 time before i start the intro because i have forgotten in the past but as all musicians know, your only a clever 'turn around' from the correct time signiture and only a half note away from a good note.
