Eeehm... Are you ok, Hilch? Or are you just ticked off by him slacking at work? You're not his boss, are you?

Buying a metronome is in my opinion VITAL if you don't already have a very trained sense of rhythm. I haven't played with a metronome under my 1,5 year of learning, and I can't play with one now... in other words, I can't play in time properly. Regular chordstrumming is fine, but riffs or anything else... no way.
So play with a metronome from the beginning, so the timing comes together with everything else, myself I have to abandon everything else now to focus on playing in time.... not too fun.

As the other guys have said- get one and use it!
I have met many musicians who cannot play in time. Setting up a groove and playing 'in the pocket' is very difficult if one cannot keep the pulse. And if you wish to play in the studio at some stage, you will have this nasty little thing called a 'click' that is there to give you the pulse. I have been in recrding sessions where the drummer has stated that the metronome was slowing down - it wasn't him!

Must have been a clockwork metronome ......

Or maybe an electronic one without eveready energizers ......

or maybe the drummer had the energizers ......

LOL, thinking along the lines of an energizer, maybe the rest of the band needed to leave the drummer in the studio overnight, so that by the next day when they returned, the drummer would have slowed down to the right tempo.

Its funny, one thing is to buy a metronome and use it and the other thing is to LEARN to use diferent timings on it. When you buy a metronome also you should learn how to play a single note each beat, 2, 3,4, and 12 notes per beat and when. There are really great exercizes for the knowledge of the metronome use that i found on the John Petrucci instructional video: Rock Discipline, wich is the best for medium guitarists. It helped me 100%. If you cant find it look very hard for some lessons about it
