I am curiuos to know what others think about just starting out. Would you advise someone to start with learning and strumming open chords or would you suggest playing notes ??? There is probaly no correct answer. I started with learning standard notation and playing notes but think if I did it over again I might start with Chords ..maybe

The notes. Chords are made up out of notes after all! Standard notion is a big help in the long run.
First the C major scale and some simple single line melodies. Then chords derived from the C major scale and pieces that incorporate both the single note lines and chords.

I started out learning my favourite songs. The trouble with learning shapes and chords first, is the boredom factor. When you can play a song that you love, albeit one of the easier ones it gives you a sense of accomplishment. When you get a little further with technique then you can then apply some music theory to what you have already learned.
The more fun you have playing, then the less chance of you throwing the towel in, which unfortunately a lot people do.

I think this has a lot of merit. I started with a "Learn the Guitar" book, which tried to go over notes. Then I took a lesson, and the first thing the teacher said was he was going to show me how to play stuff that I knew. Just real easy stuff, but yes, once you play something that sounds like something, ALLELUJIAH!!, you wanna keep playing!

The first thing most guys do is spend a lot of time figuring out their band name.

I started with strumming, but i suggest to learn a bunch of chords first(basic) before starting to pick... it also takes coordination to change chords and such

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
