I Can Play Again!

I can play, and even though very limited, it's still something!
Right now I'm only really practicing to relax while I'm playing, because that obviously has been my problem so far. And even though it's not that fun to practice in comparison to what I'm used to do, it's still playing.

Anyways, I'd like tips for left hand positions or "techniques" for comfortable playing... Especially from those of you who often stand up and keep the guitar at least as low as just between the stomach and the waist, but I'll be grateful for any tip!

Hi CK

Practising to relax is a good thing and boosts the enjoyment of playing. I believe posture is very important especially when your sitting down. Try not to hunch your back or tense up too much. As has previously been discussed here, having a good stool or chair to sit on is big advantage.
Also, I find that keepin' the groove while practising and/or playing is a great help in relaxing. Just keeping the beat with your foot is surprisingly helpful in relaxing the muscles and keeping the hands relaxed.

Hope this was a bit of a help to you anyway!

Good to hear!

Now, get rid of the idea that having the guitar slung low is a good thing. It's not!

Good news CK. Watch the position of your left hand. The thumb should pointing at the ceiling behind your index finger.

Relaxing is key. Try not to squeeze to hard with your left hand. You should be able to fret the notes without pressing your thumb into the back of the neck.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule

Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!

Buy it now for only $10
