Ouch, that hurt.

Anyone else hurt when trying to play this chord 579995.
In my guitar lesson yesterday I was learning this Zappa chord where I Barre the 5th fret with my index finger middle finger on the A string 7th fret (now this in the one that hurts) pinkie on the next 3 strings on the 9th fret with out touching the high E so your A can still be heard, which is a trick in itself to keep the 5th barred clean. My pinkie still hurts from being inverted at the 1st knuckle. Anyways just wanted to get that out there. Oh and if anyone knows what type of chord that is that would be nice too.

One of Steve Vai's early gigs was working with Zappa and even he struggled to cope sometimes. I couldn't hope to finger that chord if my life depended on it.

It's playable. It's just an E chord with an A in the bass and on top. I guess you'd call it Eadd11/A. Barre the fifth fret with with the index finger, grab the E on the A string with your middle finger and barre the E triad on the 9th fret with your pinky. Remember, the index finger only has to keep the two A notes clean. The notes on the 7th and 9th frets are held by other fingers so that allows you to use less pressure on the fifth fret.

Yeah 'bout that, Still hurts . Do you think there is any danger in seriously injuring myself? He plays it easily then looks at me with confusion when I tell him that chord sounds nice but hurts like the dickens.

You have to stretch, just like warming up for any other physical activity or you can injure yourself. Don't try and play that when you first pick up the guitar, wait until you're warmed up and then don't try and hold it for a long time. Play it and move on!

After awhile learning new, wierd chords is a lot easier. Your hands become more flexible and your brain has a better handle on teaching you fingers to to wierd stuff!

Hmm- I was able to get it pretty clean on the first try (I'm lucky enough to have big hands), but that's one of those chords that would be a real bear to make a switch to on the fly, that's for sure.

So what I did was sit around all day the other day with my pinkie inverted at the 1st knuckle and now it doesn't hurt so bad. Yea. Now if I can only get my index finger to keep the barre I'll be kicking.
