I am playing finger-stylebut can not stretch my fingers .. does it have to be played as a strummed chord with muting of the D-string (4th)?
this is from Metallica's "Nothing Esle Matters"

Myself I would play this as
-0-
-5- 4
-5- 3
-x-
-2- 1
-x-

and although I don't play tabs much I would say this is a strum (chord) not picked.

-0- play this with your ring finger
-5- play this with your swear finger
-5- play this with your index finger
--- don't pluck this
-2- play this with your thumb
--- don't pluck this

Because of the open high E, you will probably have to play the fifth frets on the B and G strings with your ring finger and little finger and play the second fret of the A string with your index finger, as opposed to barring the fifths frets yeah?

To strum this thang you will have to stop the D string moving by resting your index finger over it as it is holding down the second fret of the A string, and miss the low E of course, probably easier to finger pick it, damn right!

I play it by laying the ring finger across the 5th fret for those notes, then reach the 2nd with index. Don't worry about muting the 1st string with your ring finger, since it's the same note as what you're playing on the 2nd string. Basically, you're just playing a barred C and moving the "C" bass note down a fret, then you walk it up into the C.

Thought I recognised that tab.

I play this fingerpicked, not strummed.

I fret the G and B strings with the ring and pinky respectively and the A string with the index.

The picking hand is picking high E string with ring, B string with middle, G string with index and A string with thumb.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

The way i learnt the song doesnt play the open E string, so i play it with my little finger on the B & G string with my index finger on the A string. like a power chord, and i pick the a string with my Index finger, and the B & G strings with my Middle and Ring Fingers....

(I think from memory of seeing it live on one of the dvd's thats the way James Hetfield plays it... .

Its played as all the strings picked at the same time.... Not strummed, or picked individually...

BTW, the reason I play it with the ring finger over the strings is to add a little "flourish" by using the pinky on the 6th fret, 5th string.
