I prefer the 1 2 4 also. It frees up the ring finger to play slash chords eg 'Sunny Afternoon' by the Kinks starts in Dmin but has a descending bass line going on. I think it would be quite hard to play it withe the 1 2 3 fingering.

I'm used to the 123, and it's a pain in the ass, I'm trying to start using 124 instead...
with 123 I can never get it clean.
Slash chords are chords with a different bass note than usual.

This for example is an A/C#:
e-------------------------
B---2---------------------
G---2---------------------
D---2---------------------
A---4---------------------
E-------------------------

They are called slash chords because of the / that separates the bass note from the chord when writing it.

I agree. As Si said, I 2 & 4 is the best fingering for D minor, especially for making slash chords. It also means you can move that chord just by adding your ring finger on string 4 fret 3 and sliding it up. Move it up a fret and you've got a four string Eb minor.
I don't think most people will agree that it's easier than using fingers 1, 2 & 3, though.

Still, I only think this is because they learn from the start that 123 is the way" to take it.
