trouble playing chords
Ive been playing a month now using tabs. My old guitar teacher said if I do anything don't use tabs. I only went to him once because I moved.
I try and try but I just can't get a single good sound out. Please help me !

Do a search for Chords. There are many, many posts on this subject here. All beginners struggle with chords. Ask specific questions about your problem and we will see if we can help.

What did your teacher tell you to depend on? Notation, or your memory?
Tab, like notation or memory, is a useful device when you are learning a specific piece of music.
But don't depend on it for performance of the piece! Once you have learned a song, or part of it, try to play the it without looking at the Tab.
A good way is to play it with your eyes closed. This will show you how well you remember it!

I rely heavily on tabs to get me stated with a song, then i add my touch and simplify if needed or fit the arrangement more suitable to the way I am playing at the time. Not sure why you should not use them???

I know there are people who hate tabs because they're an easier way (for most) to read music than notation. People who learned the hard way may tend to dislike newer, easier ways that didn't exist when they learned. Perhaps the teacher was just one of those. =P

Saying not to use use TABS is like telling someone not to use a chromatic tuner cause then they won't develop an"ear"---rubbish--tabs is like any other tool--something to be tried, tested, then judge for yourself weather or not you can use them

I'm the one who suggested not to depend on tabs WHEN PERFORMING. It's certainly alright to use tabs for learning a new piece, I do it myself.
I've used Tabledit since it first came out. I find it outstanding for learning, and there are a lot of tabs of songs, in tabledit format
So please ignore my first remarks; they were not meant to stop anyone from use tab as a learning tool

well that throws the fun of this topic completely down the drain.yea might look a lil silly with some tab sheets in front of ya during a gig.but i seen it done.there was times i looked over a few tabs before we went on but thats about it.tucked them back into the case.if i screw up then it makes the whole band look bad if its done bad enough.

I don't think anyone would disagree too much with what you said Rich. I think people were posting their surprise about the comments Andy made in his original post where his teacher said don't use tab at all.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
