What style you want to learn is entirely up to you, although if you're in a beginners state it won't help you out focusing on just a certain sort of music, I'd recommend you to leave that decision for a later time.
I've tried out a lot of different musical styles, and I can't say there's a lot of difference in difficulty, at least I never noticed. Blues however is a very good style for beginners, because there's hardly nothing for getting into it, and it's very fun jamming in a 12-bar blues. ^^

Learning classical isn't bad, there's quite a lot in there which you can use for other styles as well. Just don't let it stay there if you want to learn other stuff, and do not let your teacher decide too much about what you should learn, you may end up hating the instrument that way.
Should your teacher refuse to teach you anything else than classical, then there's a lot of experienced people here to help you out with anything you may want to know.

Don't learn classical just because your teacher wants you to. You'll make a lot more progress learning music that you enjoy.
Kittie's right that classical contains a lot of great and useful techniques that can be applied to other styles, such as acoustic fingerstyle, but if your priority is to play rock and metal - then find someone who teaches it.

Well, the argument can be made that to master any style of music is very difficult. That being said, however, I think it is a good idea to have a passing familiarity with different styles but, as others have said, to ultimately play the kind of music you like. Over time, you'll likely be like most of us and start writing some of your own music- that's where knowing different styles can help create YOUR sound.
