Forgetting - Please Help - From Kush !!!
Hi Friends
This thing is worrying me a lot and I feel "completely lost"
As you know, I've learnt only a few 10 Songs so far and the latest being Tears In Heaven (not yet done). Yesterday, when I tried to recollect and play the other songs (that I've learnt prior to this) I could'nt play a thing !!!
This has made me so discouraged and I really feel like a loser
Is this because of the short time, I've been learning to play Is this normal ? Will my memory develp with time ??? All these questions are haunting me and I loose all the confidence I've developed with "Tears In Heavn".
I feel, may be because I love this song "Tears In Heaven" somuch, that I got involved in it and forgot every other song I've learnt , Anyways please help me Friends , I'm in desperate need of help and confidence

Don't worry Kush! You'll remember them! I sat down and made a list of the songs I KNEW I could play and went back thru them all to be sure I remembered them. Some of them I had totally forgotten as well, but when I looked thru my notes, it all came back! I keep a note book that I have this list in as well as my own notes of what to work on and how I want to work on them. I too get involved way heavily in whatever song I am wanting to learn at the moment...I just have to remind myself to go back and play the others
Keep at it! You play great!!

You have to set some time aside to play through the tunes you already have learned so they stay fresh in your mind,

I agree... I used to know a lot of songs but i have forgotten most of them... I have to get some of my old files and study the songs again... I wanted to play original songs only but it caused my repetoire to suffer...

the best thing tied to memory is smell, so my suggestion to you is next time
you play a song chew your favorite gum, then after you go back to play
the songs again chew the gum again and i bet you'll remember. trust me.

I only have riffs in memory-i refer back to music or tabs to play them---even pros tape a note card to the top of thier axes with the basic chord progressions inked out.

Sometimes I just need a small cue to remember. This may be looking briefly at the music or playing a little sequence.
Either way, I think what you're experiencing, Kush, is quite normal. As others have said, you need to keep going back to the songs you know to keep them fresh.
I know how you feel though since I've been there myself.

I play through some of the songs i know everyday as a warmup so I can remember them and also to play them easier. I can really close my eyes and play most of the easier ones now and I don't know for sure but that's gotta be making me better. plus it keeps me encouraged cause I get frustrated learning new songs cause they are hard
I pray one day I can play....Good

If this doesn't work; write them down in big letters, one song per piece of paper.
PS - Use a sharpie!

don't beat yourself up kush...i played for over thirty years and after my accident i never played for 7 years..now i have started again and there are things i can play and things i can't..but i can play the beginnings to more songs than i can count but some i can still play all the way through because they meant something or i practised them a little more..over time you will learn hundreds of songs and styles..some will stay with you some won't but think about why a certain song stays with you...right now you are really into "tears in heaven"...tuff song..maybe it means more to you than the others you have learned or could it be that you just have to learn the song you are working on at the time and excluding the others..if you want to keep everything you learn there are good suggestions all thru the thread...i have a 3 drawer filing cabinet filled with all the songs i learned and kept over the years and i go thru it now and again and find something but most times i say to myself "what am i doing with all these songs, i'll never play them all"..i found if i wanted to keep my library up and still learn new songs i would put X amount of time aside to work on the new one...then do a run through of the songs i wanted to remember...in otherwords repeat, repeat, repeat and try to associate the songs with something you relate to...other than that keep at it...i have read many of your threads and you are honest and passionate about being a musician...in my book that puts you halfway there
take care

Yes Marty, I understand that, but the main problem is as I start a new Piece, I get too involved (and excited) about it and almost never practice the previous ones. I guess I become very lazy in doing them over again, but I guess I have to do it, if I want to remember everything I learn
Anyways thankyou so much for Caring, pal !
Take care and have a great day
Kindest Regards and Care
