Rhythm guitar.

So, I've recently grown sick of practising lead play at home, since I get more out from playing lead with my school band and nearly nothing from playing lead alone. So now I'm looking more into rhythm guitar, which I'm not really good at anyways, so it's about time I start learning that part as well.

Now what I'm looking for is tips on techniques, strumming patterns and such things.
Preferably some fast ones (not "fast" as in strummingasfastasyoucan a la speed metal) or some comparatively tricky/advanced ones. I'd be even more grateful if you also put in a few songs where I can use those patterns. Just strumming randomly along doesn't really get me anywhere, and while I can pick out strumming patterns from songs by ear, I'm not really keen on that since takes a very long time for me to do so..

So.. anything you think might be nice to know would be nice to hear.

when i started playing back in HS, my teacher taught us styles such as flamenco, back then i taught it was stupid now i think its awesome lol i would recommend to try learning songs from Gypsy Kings, they have pretty good strumming techiques such as rasgiados (sp) though its a lil hard but when you're a ble to get it, it will help ur playing
also try jazz

D-Dawn, thanks for that link. Looks like a lotta good info for a beginner like myself.

Chaotic, I use a program called Guitar Pro to learn songs. It has helped me with strumming patterns. Without getting the strumming tempo down the chords sound nothing like the song should sound. I'm really bad at listening to songs to pick out the rhythm and GP has been a good learning tool.

Thanks, that'll have me workin' for some time and precisely what I was looking for.

Now also, there is a technique I'm wondering if someone could put up some "guide" to...
It's funk/groovy guitar play, where you in some cases move your picking hand up and down like a whisk playing a chord, but you mute the chord at some times with your left hand (the fretting hand)... I know one of the ways of playing like this, but I've heard lots of other ways and I simply can't get a grip of how to play them. Any tips, charts or anything like it on how to play like this is very much appreciated.
