Reading Sheet Music

I've tried many different things, but nothing seems to work, becuase of one main problem, i think...

I already know how to read sheet music, since i play the trumpet aswell, but i dont know what note is what on the guitar fretboard. I've tried books and websites, and may be starting lessons soon, but i cant seem to grasp it. I think that since most books and other methods start with you learning notes on the first three frets of each string, i am getting confused in that the trumpet, which has three valves, for example, plays an E by pushing down the first two vavles. When i look at the music i think, E=2, when on the guitar, it may be some other note.

Any Advice?

Check out this thread- you're not alone. I've been playing for close to 15 years and only recently have I really started to learn more than just the 1st, 5th, and 6th strings.

Do I need to know the notes?

Hi. I have a suggestion for you.

Get a song which has both tab and notes. Then practise using both at first, then when you went through a couple of times, hide the tabs, so that you can only see notes. Then practise some more. If you get stuck, then check back to the tab and see where you're going wrong.

This is what I did when I was practising classical guitar

Good luck

You already have the note of each of the open strings....so you have six notes down already!!!!! Hey, I try to cheer myself up this way guys....

A basic guitar book will teach you the remaining notes on the treble clef....there are not really that many to learn....Good luck.

When life hands you nothing but lemons make lemonade......Then sqeeze the rind into their eyes, that should blind 'em for a bit!!!!!
