Sitting with the Guitar !!! (Proper Form)

Hi Family !!!

I hope everyone's well there

I have had a very bad habit of Sitting with a Hunched-Back (if the term is correct), and may be that was causing the Shoulder Problem for me

After reading an article that the biggest mistake one can do is sitting with a Hunch, while holding the Guitar. So for the last 2 Days I've been practicing, trying to keep my Back as Straight and Upright as possible. I feel a lot of comfort in my playing and my Shoulder is straining less than before !!!

But, I feel that, keeping this upright-back, becomes painful in about 10 Mins and I feel a lot of discomfort in my back. Is this normal ? Will my back adapt to this new-position, which it hasnt experienced for over 20 years. Should I continue this way ?

Please advice with your experiences.

Thanks and Lots of Care
Kush

Forcing your back to be straight is also causing tension. There is a difference between straight and military straight.
Make sure your not leaning your head forward to look at your fingers and fretboard. That can put a lot of pressure on your back and neck.

Hi Marty

Thanks for caring ! So is it like I have to sit relatively straight, but not agressively straight ? The discomfort which I'm having now, is this normal ? My Dad said that as I have a very-very bad posture, it will take time and some effort to correct it.

Kindest Regards
Kush

Yup. Straight but, still relaxed. If your over all posture is poor, you may need to do some lower back exercises to help hold your torso upright.

Allthumbs is correct. Also, scoot your butt slightly forward in your chair - this will sorta force you into a proper upright position without stress.

Jamie Andreas at guitarprinciples.com has written extensively about form and technique contributing to the ability to play better. Check out her short little web article on sitting positions:
http://www.guitarprinciples.com/Guit...ue/sitting.htm

She also has an article on standing positions: http://www.guitarprinciples.com/Guit...elec_stand.htm
Bottom line is the Jimmy Page low-rider technique is bad for your back and hands, and may restrict your playing ability (though you do look cool!)

Thankyou so much Marty, I think I'll google for a few of them and try them tonight. Thanks again for caring, Pal

Just wanted to know, if anyone has tried it out. Anyways thankyou so much for everything

Kindest Regards

From reviews I've read, she can get very deep into the philosophical, physical and psychological elements of guitar playing - without actually teaching you how to play guitar.

Personally I think you can get a lot from browsing around her website and forum, and signing up for her free newsletter (which is often a sales pitch for the books, but once in a while contains helpful tidbits of information.)

I'm sure there's good stuff in the book(s) but I don't have time to weed through the 80% that's philosophical to get to the 20% that's practical.

Your mileage may vary.
