Can't Reach

I am just leaning. I can just play a few notes but when I try stumming and playing chords my fingers don't seem to want to reach, say, the first three frets on three different strings. The fretboard is not very wide. How can I limber up my fingers or does it all just come with practice?

Welcome catt. It does come with practice. Work your way through this link to start and then go through Nelsonites' strumming and chord lessons and Kirks' basic lessons.
Brand new to playing the guitar?...read this first.

a few links for you

http://www.accessrock.com/Intermedia...ercises-ss.asp
http://guitar.about.com/library/weekly/aa121301a.htm

If I may suggest a few I do every day :

Please do these on all 6 strings (I'm just showing 1 string) and start from Fret No: 1 to Fret No: 12

Ex-1
---1---2---3---4----

Ex-2
---4---3---2---1----

Ex-3
---1---3---2---4-----

Ex-4
----4---2---3---1-----

Ex-5
----1----3---5-------

Ex-6
------5---3---1-----

These are some of the ones which I do, Do them slowly, with full control, and use the Metronome to keep a steady timing (after developing a bit of control).

I hope this'll help you, Pal

Kindest Regards
Kush

I can vouch that that helps. Use a metronome to help you with your timing. they are free online!

I pray one day I can play....Good

  Thanks!!

Y'all are great! Thanks for the tips. This old gal decides to start learning at 40 so let's hope you can teach an old dog new tricks. I did teach myself how to play "Jesus Loves Me" and it only took me 3 hours to learn to play it by ear

Hi there Catt

You should find the finger exercises that Kush has provided helpful. I use something similar myself and have progressed to being able to play about 16 chords in around 6 weeks. Can't get from one to the other smoothly yet but I dare say that'll come.

Good luck
Tracy

hey Catt
I encourage my students to play very slowly and move through things without tension, and then build it up from there. How slow is slow? I make them play at about one note per 5 seconds or so to start with, and have them focus on being totally relaxed and in control of their hands, arms, shoulders etc. At such a slow speed they can tell if they are getting tense in anyway. After that we start to increase the speed slightly. This may seem like a long way to get results, but I think developing good technique will help you progress towards your goal much faster in the long run, and you will be a much better player for it
I am not sure if Kush mentioned it, but that exercise is very good to start with - just keep your fingers down as you ascend. Don't lift them until you need to. This helps build control and agility.
All the best

  Y'all are awesome

I work 3 jobs so sometimes I can just pick it up for 30 minutes a day. I have been using the tips y'all have given me (Thanks Kush) and have been trying to pick up notes and such. I used to sing but never could read a note...always by ear. When I pick up the guitar and start fiddling with it I hear a note or two to something. Today I taught myself Taps and can play with no hesitation. Now all I have to do is learn where to place the fingers. I am sorry to ramble but I get so excited when I can just hum the notes to myself and play a snippet of a song.

Catt
