Lap Slide...

How the heck do I learn? I play a little guitar (check out my tunes in the recording section ) and am getting better. I have always been interested in the lap slide/steel (weissenborn sound: warm, mellow, bluesy sounds). Ben and all the old blues guys have really got me on this mission to learn to play it. Problem is, there is NO ONE around me that plays it so they can teach me. I've looked online, called 3 college music departments, every music store within 30 miles and nothing. I can dabble right now and it doesnt sound like murder but it aint exactly good. Any advice? I've got one lap slide DVD from Kelly Joe Phelps (dudes amazing) but that's 1 DVD. I just don't want to develop bad habits and stunt my learning. I mean, usually there are open tunings and certain ways to play. I have to learn!!!

I have one that I fool around with. I don't know how to play it, but when I want to use it I find some open tuning ( I found some tunings on the web) and then just find the notes I want. Hunt and peck, so to speak. I come up with very simple parts, but I love the sound. Anything Kirk does on his Reso would be a good candidate for lapsteel.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule

Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!

Buy it now for only $10
