Video of My Picking Technique ! - Kush

Hi Family

I've recorded a Small-Very-Rough Video of my Picking hand as I play Dust In The Wind. As I've mentioned earlier, I've never ever played before a Person who plays Guitar too and hence I request you to Kindly view it and comment on whether my Picking Hand Postion, Finger-Picking etc is ok and If not what should I do to make it better. I'm really scared of developing Bad-Habits on my playing

Kindly advice, I'm really sorry for the Un-organised and Rough Video, as its my First Recording and I could'nt record sound too Sorry again for that.

Kindest Regards
Kush

It looks really good to me Kush!

It would be helpful to be able to hear the music while watching the picking, but still I think your technique is sound.

Kush, I'm no expert, but that looks pretty good to me, with a nice little bend in the wrist.

One thing you might want to consider is the angle of your guitar, which, from this video, looks pretty much parallel to the floor. A lot of players tilt their guitar and have the headstock pointing more towards the ceiling. This shouldn't really affect the picking hand, but some players feel it improves the reach of the fretting hand. This can be done by placing the left leg on a small stool or box which automatically raises the guitar or adjusting the strap. You can see from Kirk's videos that he tilts the guitar, and in Rockerbob's Ave Maria video, it is even more pronounced.

As I say, many players, fingerpickers especially, feel more comfortable like this but it's not essential. It may feel a little strange at first but, if you do try, persevere with it a for a while and you may get used to it.

If not you can always return to your current technique which is pretty good.

Thankyou so much friends for the advice, and for forgiving me for the Scary look on my face LOL

I agree, If I could record Sound too, you would have been able to judge better. I'll try my best to improve on this. And regarding the angle which you've adviced, I'll start prcticing to incorporate that. Thankyou so much again for your help

If I may request again, May I post a small clip of my Fretting hand too ?

Thanks a Ton for everything

Kindest Regards
Kush

Looks good to me Kush, nice and relaxed.
I agree with Simon about the angle to hold your guitar, should make your fretting easier if you angle it up more.

Way to go Kush! My suggestion would be just to 'relax' and enjoy it. Can't wait to hear some sounds too.

Keep at it.

Hi Kush

I had a look at your video & have listened to your mp3, & for someone who has just started out recently you are doing brilliantly well!!!

I watched it on WMP 10 which has the great feature that you can slow it down to 1/2 speed & analyze things a bit more closely, but still I found your hand a little fuzzy to see exactly what you were doing.

So I am wondering if when you next video your right hand, could you do it not only with sound but also at a slightly higher resolution or slightly zoom in on your right hand?

The reason I ask is that it looks & sounds to me that you are arpeggiating the chords as opposed to using travis picking or clawhammer (a guitar technique borrowed from banjo players) which Kansas uses on the original recording.

Now I know this sounds a bit rich coming from a guy who has not posted any of his own stuff but I don't have a camera, pick up, or mic or I would. What I can do is attach part of a tab of how I play it, the intro is identical to how Kansas do it & should give you an idea of what I am meaning by clawhammer as for the verse it is close to their arrangment but I have also included the melody. [By the way I tabbed this in powertab so am attaching it in a zip, you will need to download ptb in order to see & hear it]

If you want to hear a fingerstyle arrangement of this including the melody Edgar Cruz has a sample MP3 at his website.

In saying the above, you can of course play it however you personally like, but I thought you might like to know about the options & I hope it helps.
In other words: "Who am I to blow against the wind?"

Dan

PS. The midi makes it sound a bit lame, I better go & buy a mic.
PPS. Great you can't upload zips anymore So here is the midi & some gifs.

Hi Dan

Thanks for being so Kind and caring, Pal. Thanks for you kind words too, You've really encouraged me , Thanks again for this Buddy !

I wish I could post a better recording, with better resoulution and Sound, but that WEBCAM was the best available to me. Being in India and that too in a small town, I dont have much choice with anything And thats why I've returned the WEBCAM. I'm planning to get a better solution out of my further savings. I hope I'd be able to post a good video of mine, soon ]

Anyways thanks for caring so much. Take lots of Care Buddy !!!
Kindest Regards
Kush

I wish I could fingerpick...

I've been practicing it a bit lately, but I don't think I'll ever get it down. I don't even fingerpick when I play bass, I'm lost without a pick.
