Please Help Me With This Exercise ! - Kush

Hi All

I have a question regarding the below Finger-Exercise :

-----1----3----5----
-------------------1---3----5----
--------------------------------1---3----5----
--------------------------------------------1---3----5----
--------------------------------------------------------1---3----5----
---------------------------------------------------------------------1---3----5---

I use my Index for the First Fret, Ring for the Third and Pinky for the Fifth. I know this one is for developing a good strech of the fretting hand. But what I want to know is, while doing the above, Should the Index Finger remain Fretting the 1st Fret, while I play the 3rd Fret and similarly, should both my Index and Ring Fingers be Fretting while I play the 5th Fret ? I hope I'm clear with what I want to know.

I'm really sorry if my question is very Basic , Kindly advice

Not necessarily, unless you plan to go back to the 1st or 3rd frets on the same string...
your index and ring fingers should be preparing themselves to ascend to the next string...!!!

But If I may ask here, would'nt it be beneficial if I try to keep them Fixed, which I feel would make the Hand Strech-to-the-full ?

I think nocat means that you leave them where they are while your playing the 135,. As you get more comfortable with the stretch, start anticipating the next note on the next string. In other words once you have played a note with the index finger and have moved on to the ring finger, move the index to the next string and hold it while playing the ring finger note and the baby finger note. Hold the baby finger note where it is till you have played the index and ring finger on the new string.You see that your stretch is maintained pretty consistently through this exercise.

A simpler way to start is to just leave the fingers where they are and only move the finger you need to play the next note on the next string.

I have a hard time hitting that high A note with my pinky if my index and ring finger are still fretted. I usually keep the ring fretted on G but let go of the F with the index.

That's why you do stretching exercises though in all fairness, the odds of you actually playing a 135 stretch in real playing is not great unless your a shredder or doing complex arpeggios.

But wont it make the Fretting-Hand more Flexible, thus better control over the Instrument ? (Though we may not use such a strech, much in actual playing)

It will. It will make less stretched positions much more comfortable. You stretch past your comfort range to increase it.
