What should I do?
Hi there
My fingertips have begun to develop hard-ish tips but they appear to have started peeling. Should I just leave them or what? I've been playing/practicing for about a month.
Many thanks
Tracy

If they dont bother you you can leave them... I had the nasty habbit of chewwing them off... Eeeww ... you can however just maintain them nicely by scrubbing your hands or by filling the edges down... dont damage or remove the whole tip. they make playing a lot easier and much less sore...
My fingers dont peel any more... Dont know why but I am happy about it though...

It's part of the finger toughening process. Don't worry about it.

Just clip the rough edges/loose skin with your nail clippers, so that they won't get
hung up on the strings...!!!

Use a good skin conditioner or moisture. Prevents your fingertip callouses from cracking. It will keep them supple. Just remember to wash your hands before you start practicing on your fine instrument.

Hi Tracy
Thats a Natural Process, dont worry too much about it. I sometimes use a Skin-Moisturiser (in the worst cases). Just keep marching ahead, Buddy !!!

Thanks for the responses everyone
I'll keep an eye on them and see how they go. Just wanted to make sure that it was "normal".

I use a very fine grit-nail buffing board to smooth the edges off-other people have said emory boards--just don't sand off the whole callous pad.keep on going Tracy it's gonna start downhill for you now that you're getting the callouses to play longer.Scott

Same here; I just lightly sand them back when they get too rough. I also used to chew 'em off like WernHalen ... part of that nail-biting habit, which I'm happy to say I seem to have broken after 20 years. ... so keeping them smooth helped prevent me chewing them too.

I've been having this a lot as well lately, because my amount of playing has increased. No more pain for me luckily, but sometimes the pieces of skin catch on the strings and/or influence their sound. In that case, I try and file them so they don't bother my playing anymore

Thanks for all the advice guys.
Think I'll leave them for now as they don't seem to be catching on the strings but at least I now have some options to try out if they start giving me trouble.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
