Solo from Nothing Else Matters

Yep, I'm thinking of learning the solo from 'tallica's Nothing Else Matters. Not the first clean solo but the second distorted part of the solo. Any tips for me? I hven't played Metallica in ALONG time, and I really hope I can commit to learning this one because every time I say I'm going to learn a song/solo, I never get to learn it completely and record it.

Um, just learn it from Guitar World tab or borrow your friend's tab of the Black album like everyone else does. Good luck.

One of my fav songs. I often thought about learning it - lots of lessons on it on Youtube. Maybe a few of us should have a go at learning it?

+1 to Noodler's comment. Get the tab and play along.

Or I might even think about doing it by ear.

There's lots of Metallica tab books on the market. Those are possibly more accurate than the tabs you find online.

I found a good tab. Now how about would I go for a good tone? I haven't touched my distortion settings in ages! I've been playing too much clean stuff. It feels kinda awkward trying to play with distortion again.

Yeah, it sounds a bit bluesy. I read somewhere recently that if you take away the background that the solo is heavily influenced by Dave Gilmour (at least I think that's who it was).

Yes, they are, unless someone has copied the tab book.

You can tell people who've learned Metallica from tab books straight away. You get 16 year old kids playing songs note for note (which is impressive!)...and also because they play it in the right position. That's how I learned heaps of thier riffs. Although I'd just move on when I got stuck on a hard part, and since they have so many good songs you never run out of stuff to learn that you can play. I currently have the tab for the Black album on order. I'm pretty sure that album has the easiest songs to play on it and if you like that whole album, that would be good to buy, or a recent issue of Guitar World (Guitar Legends) had 5 Metallica songs, including Nothing Else Matters.
