New to guitar (sort of)
I just bought an acoustic guitar online and waiting for it to arrive. We used to have one a few years ago and I mostly messed around with it. I tried some notes but gave up. A while ago I took a music theory class and learned nothing past the godforsaken wheel...thing. I know note notation and that's about it. Anyways I'm adamant about learning guitar this time around. But everytime I look for beginner's help somewhere online the wheel or some other confusing notation shows up...charts I don't understand. Any places where I can learn from basic notation like just with the six horizontal lines and the numbers (that I can read)? Is it possible to learn to play guitar just knowing that? I think I'm too dumb for a lot of this stuff and it really gets me down and discouraged...Any suggestions or help? I'd like to learn some basics now so I can have some leverage when the guitar arrives.

I think what your referring to is called tabulature, our Captain here {Kirk} has a great starting point for this here... Tablature - what it is and how it works
Tab will teach you what note{s} to play but thats about it, "if" you know the tune! If you don't they won't be of much help as to how it's intended to be played.
Don't get discouraged, learning guitar is a lifelong journey, enjoy the ride one tick of the odometer at a time.
Also a good idea to look this over when beginning....
Brand new to playing the guitar?...read this first.

Welcome to the forum. Maybe you're not too dumb to learn all that complex stuff. Maybe you just choose to learn a simple way first. This is a good place to be, because no-one here demands that you do anything with your guitar except what you want to do. And the great thing is ... if you decide to learn more at a later date, there's no restrictions on you. Even I, (having no real ambition at all,) have a 12 string, a bass and an electric at home, just in case the fancy takes me in the future.
Why don't you try some of the beginners stuff, pick a simple tune you'd like to play, and learn the chords you need for it. You'll be amazed how quickly you can make a noise which sounds like music. And keep in touch ... we've all been right where you are now.
You can play it right away or you can
play it right. Your choice!

You can choose your own level of complexity here. in a year or so you may be ready for Kirk's plane talk material. It simplifies guitar playing very well but, picking it up too early would just add to your confusion. Hang around, play the lessons, ask questions and get more comfortable with your guitar.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
