Helping son start a band
My son and I have taken a few lessons together (neither one of us have any experience with the guitar). He has been taking piano for a few years and is really more interested in keyboards.
Have a question for anyone interested. My son who is 10 has a buddy who is taking guitar lessons from his father and another who is taking drum from his dad. Both of dads are good musicians. I don't have musical experience when it comes to playing an instrument but, I really love music (mostly classical) and so
I'd like to see if you have any advice on how we can get these youngsters together as a band. All of them are just starting out but there must be some music out there written for younger kids who want to play together. I have no idea where to look or how to approach the subject.
Any direction would greatly be appreciated
Thanks again
Bill Lawrence

I think it greatly depends on the type of music they want to play but there is a good thread going Starting a band and need advice.
It talks a lot about the workings of a band and what role each person would fill. I can't help but think though that getting them all together and just seeing what happens would be really interesting. Since they are younger I have really no idea what kind of music would be appropriate for them to practice with.
Easy To Play Songs?
That is a link for easy songs (at least on guitar) that you might want to take a look at. I'm sure there has to be one or two that would be appropriate. Let us know how it goes!

I'd skip the music written for children and try and get them into a variety of styles if they're interested. Acts like the Beatles, Bob Marley, etc. have pretty universal appeal, and it will give them a huge sense of accomplishment to play things that everyone who hears them play will recognize.
Caution, though--don't force them into it! If they want to just practice alone for a while, let them be--the worst thing that could happen would be for them to give up playing because they feel pressured etc. Good luck!

It indeed depends greatly on what music they like. I don't know if they're into it, but alot of Nirvana songs are pretty easy to play. The thread "easy songs to play" contains 4 Nirvana songs. They sound pretty cool without being too hard.
If they simply don't have roughly the same musical taste, you'd probably be wasting your time. There are however quite a few very "accessable" songs that most people seem to like and would like to play.
I miss the comfort in being sad

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
