Help on Radiohead strumming pattern.

Hi, I've been trying to learn thinking about you by radiohead ; but although the chords themselves aren't a problem I can't seem to get the strumming pattern right, no matter how many times I listen to the record and try to play along it just keeps eluding me! If anybody knows the song and can offer any advice on the correct strumming it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Down up down Down up down Down Down | Down ............

Bold = emphasis on the strumming
Underline = don't know how to say it... basically you let loose of the chord and press down again...

EDIT: It might be Down up up Down up up... But it shouldn't make a lot of difference

Hi RJ, It's a pretty fast strum, don't know if this will help much but here's a guy doing it on Youtube, this was the best one I could find, most of the acoustic videos were pretty blurred so not really any use but this isn't too bad

Thanks for the strumming pattern Dishwasher and to Starsailor for the vid, I'm sure both will be a real help ..I'm gonna go have another bash at it now I'll let you know how it goes. Hopefully I will have the song licked sometime this millenium! but I bet the neighbours are praying it will be much sooner than that!

The basic strum pattern you hear is:

Down Down Up Down
Down Down Up Down
Down

Or look at it like this:

..G.................................................. ......C
Down Down Up Down Down Down Up Down Down

You can play this and many other rhythm patterns just by doing a constant down and up strum. This doesn't mean that you have to strum the strings on each up and down, what it means is that your hand is in motion and you only strum when you need to. For example:

In the first line Down Down Up Down, your hand is actually in motion like this: Down Up Down Up Down Up (bold emphases are where the strums are. Notice that the first and the third up strokes are not played. Notice the first Down is also italicized, meaning that this is the strum that you emphasize the most.

So the full pattern is:

Down Up Down Up Down Up
Down Up Down Up Down Up
Down Up Down Up

Or the last line is

Down Up Down Up

Check out the lesson, Much Ado About Rhythm: Part 1 and begin to tackle the rhythm game on the guitar.

Holler if you have any questions.

All the best today,

Steve
