What practice DVD's would you recommend?
Sorry if this is covered somewhere but the search for "DVD" yields nothing for some reason and I've poked around through the forums and didn't run across anything specific.
That said, I've seen various postings referencing learning from DVD. I'd like to purchase a beginning guitar program on DVD but would like to know what material others have found most useful??
Any thoughts? Thanks!

That's a tough one. I have quite a collection of guitar lesson dvd's and i've probably gotten something from each one of them. I have the most fun with the "learn to play" type, but alot of it was over my head for a long time (some still is). Fender has a beginner rock guitar one that isn't to bad. But the ones i get the most mileage out of are these
Total scales techniques and applications (Mark Sternal)
Esteban 5 dvd series
"Learn to play" Pink Floyd (Jamie Humphries)
"Learn to play" Dark side of the Moon (Danny Lapointe)
These are just my tastes however and it was alot more fun for me to learn doing music I enjoy. It also forced me to get into things I hadn't considered. When I would run into a brick wall trying to do something it would direct me to specific techniques and narrow my dvd choices. I don't really feel like I need guitar lessons to much anymore like I did in the beginning, but one thing I do need is music lessons. I'm to the point now where I can hear something and find it on the fret board right away, but more often times then not I can't tell you what it is i just played. Main thing is stay with it, it still amazes me the things that I tried to do for weeks and weeks and then one day you just pick up the guitar and are doing it wondering what took so long. good luck, playing the guitar is one of the most enjoyable pastimes I've ever undertaken.
edit: Something else to consider if your just starting. With acoustic it really isn't an issue, but with electric don't waste your time on tone. I lost a good month fiddling with my amp until I figured out what good is it if I can't play a lick? I hit the clean button, put all the tone controls at 12 o'clock and left them that way for a year. In the end you'll be glad you did.

Scott58,
Thanks for the info and insight!
Hey I was wondering, is the Esteban material geared more toward acoustic and Spanish guitar? I've read some good things about his stuff and I could pick up the 5dvd set for $40. Doesn't seem like a bad price...
Thanks.

I bought Fender's "Getting Started on Electric Guitar" DVD a couple years ago when I started playing again and found it to be very good. Keith Wyatt is a very good instructor - he breaks things down so they're simple and understandable, and conveys a lot of helpful/useful tips and information in his lessons.
They offer a similar DVD for acoustic guitar (also done by Keith Wyatt), but I haven't viewed it so I can't attest to it.

Is that the 3 pack one? House of Rock I think it is. I've been considering that.

I am fearful of buying something I won't get any use out of so have relied on the net for lessons, including this wonderful site. That being said.. I do plan on buying Plane talk if I ever have extra $$$$ lying around prolly why I keep on playing "Nobody know you ...."

I've had the DVD, Fender's "Getting Started on Electric Guitar", now for a few days. So far I'd say it's great! The practice tracks are a tremendous aid, just letting them cycle over and over and playing the chords.
I really haven't looked ahead, just taking it one step at a time. I do like Keith's demeanor and presentation. Really glad I bought it!!
As I mentioned in another thread, much of my practice time is in the car (not while driving So I have another program more book related that I am using then. So between the two programs I feel like I'm moving along pretty well.
Thanks again...

Glad you like it and it's working for you, Whitebomber. I think Keith Wyatt does a pretty good job of introducing the guitarist to several different genres of music in that DVD, and he covers both rhythm and lead guitar. I enjoy his teaching style, and I like the fact that he doesn't start every lesson by showing off what a "flash" guitarist he is with some wild, screaming lead lick. I liked his teaching style so much that I bought another of his DVDs for blues guitar - and that one is very useful also.
I bought one of the Rock House DVDs a while back ("Learn Rock Guitar"), and didn't like it nearly as well. I went through it once or twice, put it on the shelf and it's been there ever since.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
Buy it now for only $10 |
