Training your ear to recognise intervals would be useful. Knowing the chord progression of the melody would be better still as the melody will largely be made up of notes from the chords in the progression.

I think its what Kirk refers to as the melody is in the chord tones.
If i got it right.

Hi sosuduckman, many of Kirk's lessons cover this. Its a big subject. Browse through Kirk's lessons, and maybe The Power of Chord Tones here
and part 2 of that lesson. Plus maybe The Music Building lesson or The C Major Chord lesson (and maybe "New to learning guitar Read this first" at the top of the Forum menu to give you more background) and many more.

Have a go at some of these, and if you have questions just ask.

Kirk has this lesson where he sort of solos of chords with only his index. It sounds so amazing, he does with one finger while I need all four of mine. lol

Btw, I think these are the chord tones eddie is talking about.

If you bought Plane Talk, you'll have it figured out sooner than you think! You'll understand exactly what Si was talking about when he mentioned "chord progressions" and "intervals", and you'll also understand the concept of "chord tones" which Kirk teaches.
