Playing the guitar while singing. Any shortcuts to master it?
Hi,
I have find it quite difficult to play the guitar while sing.
Is there any method that you all can provide me, so as to learn to play and sing easily?
Cause up till now, all i can do is keep practising.
Sometimes, i can learn up till a week or two before i master singing and playing the guitar...

Well this is all coming from another beginner but I've thought of the same scenario... the only two things i can think of is ALWAYS sing while you play and just kinda force it into your playing or get very good at guitar (or a specific song) FIRST then when you can do things while your playing without thinking start to incorporate singing into your practice. but like i said in the first place...this is coming from a fellow beginner.
Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel...
...is just a freight train comin' your way

I try to use key words in the lyrics as markers for progression changes.

If you just started then you have the right idea to sing while practicing, or hum, mumble, whatever suits ya

I find that knowing the lyrics 'real well' helps. So I sing them whenever I can get away with it, and then I can concentrate more on the guitar and less on them when trying to do both.
Singing on stage in front of people, I think it's always best to keep the lyrics going and let the guitar catch up if it gets awry or clunks a chord. So knowing the lyrics to the nth degree helps that too.
To add to Allthumbs comment, I often use word(s) from one line to be a reminder of the next line's starting word(s).
Not sure I explained that well -
For example, from Yesterday: '...seemed so far away' then I somehow have in my mind that 'now I...' comes next.

I agree with all the comments above, and think that Johnnydox's comments about getting those lyrics memorized is important even if you're not doing it live, when you play the tune you can hear those lyrics and figure out where to put them in a song, also break the song down, sing a verse over and over to get the hang of it and slowly piece the song together once you have the first couple of verses and the chorus down you've virtually nailed the song, the biggest problem is timing doing the chord changes and making sure your voice varies with the chord changes that's the thing that takes practice, it also depends what key your voice is in some of us sing high some of us sing low etc. not all songs suit our voice so that has to be taken into consideration as well, all singer songwriters originally write songs to suit their voice so the songs have to be reworked to suit whoever's performing it, I sing quite high so I don't think there's much chance of me singing old man river in the near future without bringing the keys up a bit.
I also sing songs at every opportunity without the guitar, singing makes you feel good, I think everyone should do it irrespective of how good their vocals are, it's good for your health
