Smooth Changes
Hi all,
I'm new here; just started playing the guitar about 2 months ago and I'm completely immersed in it! Every chance I have while I'm sitting at home I find myself picking up my guitar and practicing or just strumming along.
The question I want to ask you guys is about making a smooth sound transition from one chord to another. The problem is that when I change chords, the sound from the chord I was playing stops sounding as soon as I lift my fingers off the strings, causing a dead spot in the music. This problem happens to me every time when moving away from a barre chord (which I just started learning), and sometimes when moving from open chords. Especially with the barre chords, I guess lifting my index finger causes all the strings to stop sounding.
How can I go about correcting this? Is it just getting chord changes down so quickly that the dead time is minimized to the point that it's unnoticeable, or is there a certain way to pull off of the strings that I'm not doing?
Thanks for the help. This is a great site; I'm glad I found it!

Most songs have slight pauses to allow for the chord changes, others less of a pause. As you get more accustom to the changes they will go more smoothly.
And welcome to the forum.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule
Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
