Exclamation Individual Picking

Hey, when I play single picking notes (from reading music), I have the tendancly to rest my pinky on the high E string. If I have to play the high E, then i let my pinky rest on the pick gaurd. It steadies my right hand for plucking. Is that a problem? Should I start practicing with my pinky off? Will keeping my pinky their affect my abilities?

Please respond. Thanks.

I wouldn't worry about it sd08 ... if and when it hinders you in any way, have a look at it again and change whatever needs to be changed. I think most of us anchor something down ... I tend to mute off strings I'm not playing with my thumb and index finger, unless I want everything to ring ... then I don't anchor anything. When I play electric I tend to rest the heel of my hand on the side of the bridge ... so much so that over the 33 years I've owned the guitar, I've worn the metal away, as you can see in the images below.

Clancy, better check Kirks equipment for fatigue! Excellent picture, by the way.

The GfB&B Guitar Slide Rule

Download the PDF of the 'Guitar Chord Slide Rule', print it out, fold it together and you'll have at your disposal a very neat tool that will not only show you all the positions for the main flavors of chords, but will also teach you a very important lesson about how the guitar works... It consists of a folded sleeve and six double sided inserts, instructions for cutting it out and folding it together are included with the PDF ... it's very simple to do, and if you botch it, you can simply print it out again!
